Start your own charity

If helping poor people is your burning passion, then nothing can be more gratifying than making the ultimate sacrifice and starting your own charity. Many amazing people have taken this leap, and despite little or no knowledge of the lives, society, culture, beliefs, or attitudes of the poor people they choose to help, they have a vision that over-rides all such hindrances. They see a need that even the beneficiaries are often unaware of, and can apply imagination and determination where practical knowledge and understanding would suggest doing something completely different. Are you this very special type of person?

My favorite example is of a young American woman who traveled to Siem Reap in Cambodia several years ago. It was her first time in South East Asia, in fact her first time anywhere, and despite being there less than a week she could immediately see what so many of the ‘experts’ who had been there for years could not. Everywhere she looked there were poor children, despite all the expensive hotels, schmancy restaurants, and well-heeled tourists. She did the only thing a person of compassion and true vision could do, and, after emailing everybody she knew to ask for funds, she opened an orphanage. At the time there were less than 30 orphanages in Cambodia, now there are over a hundred, most the initiative of kind-hearted local entrepreneurs, but many undoubtedly inspired by foreign visionaries just like this young woman.

If you do plan on opening your own overseas charity, remember to first research local laws and regulations. The more lawless and less regulated the country, the easier it will be to realize your dream.
